It is a city of contrasts, where camels wait for traffic lights with Auto Rickshaws and Ambassador cars. With a crowd of turbaned men and women in resplendent in iridescent limes, green, hot pink and sunflower coloured dresses looks stunning with a backdrop of ancient forts of Amber, Nahrgarh, Jaigarh and Moti Dungri, that lend a dramatic testaments to a bygone era which impart a lingering romance to this chaotic city. This forts clad tapestry makes up the ‘Pink City’ or the capital of Rajasthan.
Among Jaipur highlights are its fascinating City Palace, which has a fine museum with priceless exhibits dating from the successive reigns of Kachwahas Rulers. Nearby is the Jantar Mantar and the old city is quiet fascinating place to wander. As it is laid out on a grid pattern, it’s fairly easy to orient yourself here.
The City Palace
This complex is the most important landmark with its numerous outbuildings, courtyards, impressive gateways and temples. Across the road from the palace is the Jantar Mantar, one of the five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh. A collection of complex astronomical instruments, chiseled out of stone- most of which continue to provide fairly accurate information to this day - is the highlight of this observatory.
