A rugged fort famous for housing Jaivana, once the world's largest cannon on wheels, and for its extensive water harvesting system.
Jaigarh Fort is a majestic fortress built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1726 to protect Amber Fort and its palace complex. Located on the promontory called Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) of the Aravalli range, the fort offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
The fort is named after Maharaja Jai Singh II, the ruler who built it. Unlike other forts in Jaipur, Jaigarh Fort was built purely for defense purposes and houses many structures of medieval military architecture.
The fort's most famous attraction is Jaivana, which was once the world's largest cannon on wheels. Cast in 1720, this massive cannon has a 20-foot barrel and required four elephants to swivel it. Remarkably, it was fired only once in a test, and the cannonball landed about 35 kilometers away.
Jaigarh Fort is also known for its extensive water harvesting system, which includes a massive tank that can store 6 million gallons of water. The fort has several palaces, gardens, and temples within its premises, along with a well-preserved armory and a museum displaying various artifacts from the royal era.
